google earth

Does anybody else find themselves wasting (?) hours looking at the planet through google maps?  I think it might be my new obsession.  I can't help myself.  A mention of a place I don't know and I'm google-mapping it and, before I know it, have distracted myself for a long time.  Usually time I can't afford.  ;~P

But I can't express how enamoured I am of this planet, and how pretty it is.  The colours and shapes... I can look at them forever!

I was reading a news article this morning in which there was a reference to Lake Titicaca, and I realised, despite knowing the name really well, I had no idea where it was or what it looked like.  Enter google maps.  And, as per my usual style, I looked around a bit and found this pretty place -

...and ending up spending an hour trying to find the name of this body of water.  The best I can do is tell you that it's in Bolivia, south of Lake Titicaca, and west of Lake Poopo`.   Why doesn't google maps label water?  I've had this problem looking up rivers too.  Bad googlemaps!

But isn't it pretty?!

I would have Googlemaps' babies.

Me too! I love it to death!! Good to know I'm not the only one crazily obsessed. XD

just alternating between my house and yours and making it zoom out and in again.

Zooming down on the Eiffel Tower.

Trying to work out which Maldive I stayed on!

Hahaha! My house looks way different now. They haven't updated our satellite pic since 2005 I'd estimate.

I was looking at the Islands I honeymooned on back in '85 a couple of nights ago! XD You can zoom in on Dunk Island, but Bedarra is still a blur. ;~P

Google earth is addictive too, it was funny to see the cars parked in front of our house, wonder what the time frame is for that?

Aren't they pretty much the same thing? I personally prefer googlemaps cos I don't like the whirly-spinny thing google earth does. The rest of the family think it's fun but it makes me nauseous. ;~P

The pic of our house/area is really old; c2005. Bridges and schools have been built since it was taken!

I had no idea, I just found google earth, I have never tried google maps, I just assumed it was like mapquest. Cool, I am going to check it out now...lol.

I've used google maps and google earth before. Yeah it is pretty neat. Amazing the details they can get.

Love your avatar! :~)

I use googlemaps to travel around Disney. I'm pretty obsessed with it

You used to be able to zoom in all the way on google moon and it was cheese, but I just can't seem to get it to work anymore.

NYC rocks - you can go right down to ground level there and look at things from a ground level perspective!
And you can bet I'll be watching the Florida theme park where they're building HP world. ;~)

Ahahaha, I feel like much less of a nerd now! I use GoogleMaps at work (I make maps, and I use Google to double-check things) and I get distracted by "wandering" all over the planet, looking at the houses of everyone I know. Glad to know I'm not the only one!

I can lose an hour or more easily if I open google earth at work. I have always been a fan of maps. My Dad taught me how to read maps as a child, so it's one thing I still enjoy doing. I love looking at landmarks in Google Maps' satellite view. I even put a compass in the car just to add to the map navigation thing I like to do. (I am such a geek sometimes!)

Is it wrong that as an adult I still want to put a huge world map up on my bedroom wall floor-to-ceiling like in that Joseph Fiennes movie? Hm.

It's very pretty.

I love the place. I spent hours the other day looking up the area I was born in, finding my grandparents place and where we used to live and looking at the pier.

So much fun.

Mmmmm *loves that program*
13th-Mar-2008 07:20 am (UTC)
Lol! I used to spend my time there during lunch when my friend didn't come to school and I couldn't hang out with anyone. XD

I would always go look at my house first, and then go to Europe and stuff. :P

"Street View" on google maps is terribly, horribly addictive.
13th-Mar-2008 12:54 pm (UTC)
Very pretty! I love maps and can loose myself completely in googlemaps or Google Earth - but then, I can get caught up in reading dictionaries when looking up some word so I might just have an incredibly nerdy brain... :>

Heh, guess why I'm a geography/environment teacher? So many landscapes to look at :)

Your image is a salar (salt pan) situated immediately north from the bigger and dryer salar de Uyuni. On this photo, the water was relatively high without much salt. The google earth image shows dried parts with a white salt crust. Also, someone uploaded a picture in Google Earth and labelled it at the Coipasa salar which seems to be the correct denomination.
